Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
