In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
